The Orange Barred Sulphur Butterfly chrysalis...
They began life as little white specks on my Cassia alata leaves

and they hatched into very hungry caterpillars and started munching away at the Cassia flowers.

And then we put them in an old ice cream bucket with a screen on top and fed them more Cassia flowers until they attached their little caterpillar butts to the screen and hung upside down in a 'J' position for a day. Then they wiggled and wiggled and wiggled until they shed their caterpillar skins (I SAW this but I didn't think to grab the camera... maybe next time!) At first they are yellow

and several hours later, they turn green.

I don't have any butterfly pictures yet. This is the stage we are in right now. I always have a hard time photographing sulphurs because they won't stay still for long but I have high hopes this time!!

Very interesting. I've never seen the process that happens to make a butterfly. Great post.
It is so much fun raising butterflies and moths!!
Darn! I have nothing mean to say about these fabulous pics Ms. CFG!!!
Hope you are having a swell week end...I am off to weeding! Perhaps we could attribute my bitterness to my recent weeding overindulgence? ☺
Oh my! I just came over to your blog because I saw your comment on someone else's and I am nosey when I have something in common!!
Blown away by your beautiful garden and photos - absolutely divine.
Latane, This was the first time I'd ever seen the caterpillar-to-chrysalis transformation. It usually happens when we aren't looking. Even my husband was drawn into the event!
Darla, I started casually raising caterpillars a few years ago. Casually meaning maybe one or two a year. This year, my daughters and I have raised more than ever before and we all enjoy it so much!
GF, lol, I saw those other comments.... but as you know I've been away from the computer a lot this week. A payback will be coming soon. :) Oh, and thanks for the compliment!!!
Jeanie, Welcome and thank you for dropping by! I took a quick peek at your blog... I'll be back for a longer visit later!
Wow! I would love to do this some time! Thanks for letting us know how it's done. Great pictures.
